Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Red and black gel food coloring
  • Royal icing
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla extract and eggs.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  3. Divide the dough in half. Tint one half red and leave the other half plain.
  4. Wrap each dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
  6. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Place cookies on baking sheets.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden. Let cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Decorate with royal icing and sprinkles.

  • For a darker red, add black gel food coloring to the red dough.
