Description

A simple scalloped potatoes recipe using milk for a creamy, comforting side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  3. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in salt and pepper.
  4. Arrange potato slices in the prepared baking dish, overlapping slightly. Pour milk mixture over potatoes.
  5. Bake for 60-75 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
  6. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the milk mixture.
  • You can also add shredded cheese, such as cheddar or Gruyere, to the top of the potatoes during the last 15 minutes of baking.
