Ingredients

- 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 3 to 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in salt, melted butter, and beaten egg.
- Gradually add 3 cups of flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and divide into 12-16 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
- Place rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Brush tops with softened butter immediately after removing from oven.
Notes
- For richer rolls, use whole milk.
- You can add herbs or cheese to the dough for variation.
