Description
Simple scalloped potatoes baked with a creamy cheese sauce.
Ingredients

- 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
- Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, and cheddar cheese until melted.
- In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the potatoes, then half of the onions. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the top.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, onions, and cheese sauce.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
- Add a pinch of nutmeg to the cheese sauce for extra flavor.
